Daily consumption of walnuts, rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, may improve the health of blood vessels, thereby decreasing the risk of heart disease.
Supplementing the diet of middle aged idiabetics with 56 grams of walnuts led to significant improvements in the function of the blood vessel lining. There was also a trend toward improved cholesterol levels.
There are about 19 million people in the United States with diabetes, equal to eight per cent of the population. The total cost from diabetes is about $175 billion.
